Product Description

The delightful classic by E. B. White, author of Charlotte''s Web and Stuart Little, about overcoming obstacles and the joy of music.

Like the rest of his family, Louis is a trumpeter swan. But unlike his four brothers and sisters, Louis can''t trumpet joyfully. In fact, he can''t even make a sound. And since he can''t trumpet his love, the beautiful swan Serena pays absolutely no attention to him.

Louis tries everything he can think of to win Serena''s affection—he even goes to school to learn to read and write. But nothing seems to work. Then his father steals him a real brass trumpet. Is a musical instrument the key to winning Louis his love?

"We, and our children, are lucky to have this book." —John Updike

The Trumpet of the Swan joins E. B. White favorites Charlotte''s Web and Stuart Little as classic illustrated novels that continue to speak to today''s readers. Whether you curl up with your young reader to share these books or hand them off for independent reading, you are helping to create what are likely to be all-time favorite reading memories.

Swan Song

Like the rest of his family, Louis is a trumpeter swan. But unlike his four brothers and sisters, Louis can''t trumpet joyfully. In fact, he can''t even make a sound. And since he can''t trumpet his love, the beautiful swan Serena pays absolutely no attention to him.

Louis tries everything he can think of to win Serena''s affection -- he even goes to school to learn to read and write. But nothing seems to work. Then his father steals him a real brass trumpet. Is a musical instrument the key to winning Louis his love?

About the Author

E. B. White, the author of such beloved classics as Charlotte''s Web, Stuart Little, and The Trumpet of the Swan, was born in Mount Vernon, New York. He graduated from Cornell University in 1921 and, five or six years later, joined the staff of The New Yorker magazine, then in its infancy. He died on October 1, 1985, and was survived by his son and three grandchildren.

Mr. White''s essays have appeared in Harper''s magazine, and some of his other books are: One Man''s Meat, The Second Tree from the Corner, Letters of E. B. White, Essays of E. B. White, and Poems and Sketches of E. B. White. He won countless awards, including the 1971 National Medal for Literature and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, which commended him for making a "substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children."

During his lifetime, many young readers asked Mr. White if his stories were true. In a letter written to be sent to his fans, he answered, "No, they are imaginary tales . . . But real life is only one kind of life—there is also the life of the imagination."

Fred Marcellino''s picture books include Puss in Boots, a Caldecott Honor Book; The Steadfast Tin Soldier, an ALA Booklist Children''s Editors'' Choice; and The Pelican Chorus, one of School Library Journal''s Best Books of the Year.

His most recent books, The Story of Little Babaji and Ouch! are both ALA Notable Children''s Books.

Dancing By the Light of the Moon: The Art of Fred Marcellino will open on November 9, 2002 and run through January 26, 2003 at The Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. This is a comprehensive show of more than 150 pieces highlighting his children''s book career, and the first museum retrospective honoring the artistic accomplishments of this remarkable artist. The first half is an interesting and sweet story about a young boy observing nature, a Swan family, the friendship that develops between one of the young swans, that has no voice, Louis, and the boy, Sam. Louis tries to find ways to "speak", he learns to read and write, which enables to communicate with humans but not with his fellow swans as he realizes. His father is desperate to help his son and gets him a trumpet, and yes he steals the trumpet, which I have no problem with, as it is done out of love and it finally enables Louis to say "Ko-hoh" and over time a lot more. Up to this point the book is wonderful, but with the chapter "A Night at the Ritz" things start to lose their magic, the magic that makes you be in the story, care for the characters. It interjects adult views, whether that be mentioning Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, names with little meaning to a child even in 1970, mentions gun control laws, and once the story moves to Philadelphia it became enervating in large parts as it had totally lost the perspective of the child, especially highlighted with the adults fighting on a sidewalk scene.

There is also the issue that while Louis''s father loved him so much that he went against his feeling of honor to steal a trumpet for his son, so he could have a voice, Louis agrees to drop of one of his cygnets whenever the Philadelphia Zoo needs another Trumpeter Swan. There they will get their wings clipped and be robbed of their freedom, the freedom to fly, to be with their family, to find a partner. Given that the book is about love, family, finding your own way with unconditional love, friendship, strength and creativity, this is a glaring inconsistency! Especially so given that Louis received the support to find all these things, but now he is not going to do the same for his cygnets? And yes, at one point there is a short pretense that the cygnets he would drop off at the Zoo are those that need help, but so did he, and he absolutely did not want to stay at the Zoo nor did he want his beloved female partner be held there! So the love that enabled him to become himself, he will not give the same to his cygnets? Makes no sense and is even cruel, which doesn''t jibe with Louis''s character.

The author lost his way here and ended the book on a very low note. Very disappointing after a great start.

E.B White never disappoints. This is such an endearing book that communicates hard work, differences, and perseverance in such a creative way. This is a family read aloud for us, and my ten and five year old boys both really enjoy it.

This is the first chapter book that we completed for our homeschool read aloud! It was easy for me to read, and my 7 year old son was able to narrate it well. I love Sam Beaver''s character and his appreciation for nature, living things, and journaling. He''s a great role model for children. I''m glad that there was a happy ending and we were able to celebrate this as our first big chapter book that we completed.

I think it was a good book but it should be for kids younger than 10 because of the level of imagination.

I recently read someone describe this book as either overlooked or underrated. I agree. When you think EB White you usually think of Charlotte''s Web or Stuart Little. This is another good one. Maybe not up there with Charlotte, but still very good, if a tiny bit dated. Like all White''s books, it''s about things in life that really matter and never change: love, friendship, honesty. I probably started buying White''s books for young relatives before they were old enough for them (I couldn''t wait), but I think once a child is 4 or so these are books a patient adult can read to them, maybe a chapter a night.

Everyone has a story from childhood that they remember and sometimes revisit. This little gem is EB White''s lesser known work compared to Charlotte''s Web or Stuart Little but no less powerful. It is touching and strong because it there is no bad guy, no evil character or even a protagonist, just about Louis the swan and how he overcomes his mute handicap with the support and love of his family and friends, growing up and finding love as he does so. White does it amongst the backdrop of an America that is still innocent but familiar to children and lovers of wildlife alike. I felt for Louis and loved his character and even now can only imagine a grand old swan with his mate flourishing a trumpet.
